Jesus and Zaccheus

Luke 19:1-10

How did it come to this?
How did I end up becoming the man I am today?
Do you think I wanted to be a tax collector when I was a wee boy at school?
Don't get me wrong,
I know I've made my bed
and I lie in it every night
lonely, afraid,
fearful of what tomorrow might bring.
(Guys like me don't live that long you know!)

I heard him coming long before I saw him.
I just wanted to be part of the crowd,
to be the same as everybody else.

But he knew better.
"Come down wee man, let's go to your house for dinner,
I'm starving." he says.

I couldn't remember the last time anyone had come to my house,
unless it was to have a go at me.
Suddenly, I knew who I was again,
and I knew what I had to do.
The money, the trappings of success,
none of that really mattered.

All that mattered was that this man
was my friend.

  1. How feasible is it to deliberately go out of our way to make friends with people on the fringes of normal society? Who are they anyway?
